Health Care

We have to continue to the move towards universal, single payer healthcare and there are two major reasons why we need to. It’s the morally right thing to do and we have to reduce health care costs to compete with other nations in the global economy. The current rate of growth of health care costs (131% over the last ten years) is unsustainable.

Average Insurance Premiums

The chart below shows how family insurance premiums have increased over the last ten years. Median family annual income in America is approximately $46,000. Insurance premiums are 22% of family compensation and we can no longer afford this hidden tax. $1115 a month for insurance is more than a lot of families’ house payment. This $7584 increase in annual premiums over the last ten years could have been a pay raise if our employers didn’t face these staggering costs.

Cost of US Health Care system

We already have single payer systems in this country. Medicare is the like the Canadian health care system. The military and veterans health care system is like the British healthcare system. No industrialized nation has a “for profit” health care system like the United States. Publicly traded medical corporations have to steadily increase profits to keep Wall Street happy. The way to raise profits is for them to raise prices. The costs of our system are almost twice what other countries we compete with are paying and as a country our level of care isn’t that much better. Universal, single payer healthcare is the only way to reduce health care costs in America.
