National Debt

Charge and Spend Republican Policies

The growth of the budget deficit and corresponding growth of the national debt is unsustainable. The twelve trillion dollar national debt is the result of three decades of “charge and spend republican” policies. In 1980 the national debt was only one trillion dollars and now has soared to twelve trillion dollars. See the vertical trajectory of the debt since 1980 in the graph below. Our debt situation is now worse than it was in the Great Depression.

Debt vs GDP

The republican approach over the last 30 years has been to demonize our government and attempt to reduce spending by using tax cuts. However, they never had the will to rein in spending. The national debt practically doubled under George W. Bush when the republicans controlled congress.

Take Ownership of Government

I ask you to take ownership of our bloated government. When the federal government spends $1 Billion, realize that is three dollars of your money. For, example the Iraq War so far has cost $710 Billion. That is $2130 each from you, your spouse and each of your children. If the public takes ownership of the budget maybe we’ll get angry enough to throw out the entrenched incumbents that created this mess. Especially “charge and spend republicans” who pose as fiscal conservatives. We need leaders whose only answer to building a budget is not more tax cuts, more unfunded wars and the creation of more debt. The republicans think they can put everything on that Bank of China credit card up in Washington, DC. That credit card is nearing its limit.

Reduce the Deficit

We have to develop a plan to reduce the growth of both the national debt and the deficit. This plan should include allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire and intelligent trimming of federal spending. The public wants to receive value for its tax dollars, not massive, careless cuts in government programs.
